Corinth Pipeworks S.A. (CPW) and Europe’s largest heavy plate producer Dillinger are pioneering the construction of high-pressure gas pipelines for up to 100% pure hydrogen. Hydrogen is considered the energy carrier of the future: versatile in application, producible from renewable energies, and highly efficient both as a fuel and for energy storage. Recognizing its key role in decarbonizing industry and enabling the energy transition, the European Union adopted its Hydrogen Strategy. The goal is to produce around ten million tonnes of green hydrogen within the EU by 2030 and import an additional ten million tonnes. A prerequisite for this is the availability of the corresponding infrastructure in the form of a pan-European hydrogen transport network. This European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) is expected to consist of roughly 70% converted natural gas pipelines and 30% newly built hydrogen pipelines.
Greek pipe manufacturer Corinth Pipeworks S.A. (CPW) and Dillinger, Europe’s largest heavy plate mill based in Saarland, are spearheading the development of high-pressure pipelines for up to 100% pure hydrogen. Their successful collaboration on Europe’s first certified pure hydrogen pipelines in Poland and Italy serves as a benchmark for the industry.
Corinth Pipeworks is a leading Tier-1 supplier of steel pipes meeting the highest standards of the global oil and gas industry. Over 90% of its projects involve gas transmission pipelines for natural gas, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. A leading role in R&D for pipeline technology in the energy sector complements the company’s portfolio. Based in Thisvi, near the historic city of Corinth, CPW operates under a one-stop-shop principle, supplying all welded products for hydrogen pipelines – from production to in-house certification in its state-of-the-art hydrogen laboratory and delivery. Founded in 1969 in Corinth, the company opened its modern production facility with direct port access in Thisvi in 2000. The 800,000 m² site, with 130,000 m² of covered facilities, houses ten production units: four pipe mills producing pipes from 2.5 to 100 inches in diameter, two external coating plants, one internal coating plant, a concrete coating facility, and a double-jointing plant. Annual production capacity reaches up to one million tonnes. Since 2016, CPW has been part of Cenergy Holdings SA.
Dillinger Hütte (Dillinger AG) is a world leader in the production of premium-quality heavy plates. These high-tech plates are used in demanding projects in structural steel construction, offshore and onshore wind power, linepipe, pressure vessels, and mechanical engineering. Covering the full value chain – from iron and steel production to rolling mills, trading, flame-cutting, and processing operations – Dillinger also delivers everything from a single source. The long-standing, trust-based partnership between CPW and Dillinger continues to drive innovation in hydrogen-ready infrastructure.
